Jerry Thomas Phelps, 76, of Appomattox passed away at home with family on Tuesday, September 26, 2017, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Portsmouth, Va., son of the late James Clayborn and Reather Teaster Phelps. He was predeceased by brothers Bobby, Jimmy, Stanley and Robert.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 10 years, Deborah Fanney Phelps; a daughter Sherry and William Tim Wimberley and grandsons, Timothy Shane Wimberley and Sean Thomas Wimberley; two great-grandchildren; his step-sons, Jeff and Robin Fanney and Keith and Jeri Lynn Fanney; his step-daughter Stephanie and Brian Claiborne; seven step-grandchildren; his only sister, Betty and Larry Currie of Bracey, Va.; and his mother-in-law, Louise Archer Repass of Appomattox.
Retired from Carquest in Portsmouth before moving to Appomattox, Jerry had the time to spend with nature, hunting, gardening and nurturing his newly planted trees. He particularly enjoyed camping trips which included fishing and hiking, especially on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Crab Tree Falls. A fan of McDonald's coffee, he enjoyed talking with fellow coffee drinkers about these past-times.
Funeral services will be held at Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattox, at 2 pm on Friday, September 29, with Rev. Raymond B. Archer officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
The family expresses gratitude to nurse Diann H. Pickett and her staff at Centra Hospice.
