Obituary

James Edward Woody, Jr., 89, of Appomattox, died Saturday, May 20, 2023. He was the husband of the late Phyllis Branch Woody.

Born in Nelson County, August 7, 1933, he was a son of the late Glendola Catron Carter and the late James Edward Woody, Sr.  James served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and American Legion Post #104.

He is survived by his daughter Sharon Petty; stepchildren, Vanessa Mettler (Leon), Wanda Jobe (John) and Tony Phelps (Laurie); one brother, Roy Woody (Iris); stepbrother, Sammy Carter (Gloria); four grandchildren, Adam Clifton, Jacob Jobe (Holly), Zach Jobe (Aimee) and Mikayla Phelps; four great-grandchildren, Christian, Taytum, Jensen and Luke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, James A. "Hooty" Woody; one granddaughter, Destini Phelps; one brother, W.L. "Bill" Woody; and three sisters, Hazel Thomas, Hilda Massey, and Mary Carroll.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Liberty Cemetery with Pastor Tommy Bryant officiating.

The family will receive friends at his residence.
