He served in the navy during WWII and was retired from 40 years service with the city of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department. With extensive aptitude in horticulture, a number of parks, gardens, and public spots throughout the city still show evidence of his love and talent in God's nature beauty. He was a farmer and gifted wood worker. Many family members and friends today posses furniture and craft items from his workshop. He and his devoted wife made the Spout Springs community an Appomattox County their home for over 35 years and prior to that time enjoyed their farm in Buckingham County and their home in Lynchburg. They were renowned throughout their community for their generosity in sharing their home, their gardens and fruits of their labors with friends and strangers alike. No one was ever turned down or turned away from their Christian Benevolence. Stories abound of them assisting people in need even when they did not know their names. James was a dedicated and faithful member, deacon, and trustee, of Friendship Baptist Church where he labored tirelessly until his later years when poor health forced him to turn the reins over to others. His life could be summed up by a quote from a newspaper reporter who interviews him in his later years who said, "Jim Woodall is a kind man". Family and friends alike will miss him.
