James Edward (Jimmy) Vassar, Sr., 69, of Hummingbird Lane, Concord, passed away, Monday, November 16, 2009, at his home with his family by his side after a long illness.
Born in Lynchburg, September 6, 1940, he was a son of the late Hilton P. Vassar, Sr. and Minnie Daniel Vassar. Jimmy was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and retired after 39 years from B & W as a foreman.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rosemary Knight Vassar; his son, James E. Vassar, Jr.; granddaughters, Tiffany M. Vassar, Amanda R. Daniel and husband, Bryan, Shana Johnson, Heather Johnson, and Hailey Johnson; great grandson, Michael Scott Daniel; brother, Hilton P. Vassar, Jr. and wife, Jo Ruth; sisters, Sandra D. Vassar and Helen S. Gravely; brother-in-law, Horace N. (Bo) Knight and wife, JoAnne; sister-in-law, Leila Thomas; two special aunts, Margaret Skinner and Nellie Skinner; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip G. Vassar, Sr.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, November 18, 2009, in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Tom Walker.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home today (Tuesday) from 7-8:30 pm and other times at the residence.
