James Addison Nolen, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle joined our Lord on July 31, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Paige Clark Nolen and his children, Ann, Martha, Thomas, Misty, Jonas and Jeff.
Jim was born June 15, 1936, in Wolf Trap (Halifax County) Virginia. He was the son of the late George Ross Nolen and Adeline Morrison Nolen. He was preceded in death by his beloved sisters, Ann Bishop Nolen Raiford and Addie Mae Nolen Jordan and his step-mother, Geneva Nolen. He is survived by his sisters, Myrtle Nolen Willis, of Richmond VA, and Vera Nolen Weaver (husband Bob) of Miami, FL and a brother George Thomas Nolen (and wife Debbie) of Chester, VA. He was a doting grandfather to Ian, Chase, Will, Simon, Lexi and Addie. He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews that filled him with great joy and pride.
Jim was a 1953 graduate of Amelia County High School, a 1957 graduate of Virginia Tech, where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets and the Highty-Tighties regimental band. In 1969, Jim received his Master's in Education from North Carolina State University. He was an MP in the U.S. Army and served with Company B in the National Guard. Jim worked as an extension agent in Buckingham and Appomattox Counties, and also with Farm Bureau in Cordele, Georgia, where he made many life-long friends, and as a vice president with Central Fidelity Bank. In 1977, Jim began his career in real estate and appraisal. He opened his own real estate sales business in 1980, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2008. He was a charter member of Grace Hills Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. Also, Jim was active in numerous organizations including, the Oakville Ruritan Club, former member of the Appomattox Lions Club, Charter member of the Appomattox Moose Lodge, Virginia Tech Alumni Association, Lynchburg Civil War Roundtable, Lynchburg Association of Realtors, and former member of the Board of Directors Lynchburg Association of Realtors.
Jim was not only a wonderful husband and father, but a treasured friend to many people, and was admired by many in the community. He was an avid historian, reader, story-teller, humorist, football enthusiast (go Hokies!) and farmer. He will be especially missed each day in the "morning board meetings" at McDonalds.
A memorial service will be held on 11:00 a.m., Thursday August 4, 2011 at Grace Hills Baptist Church, Appomattox, officiated by the Rev. Adam Tyler. A reception will follow in the Family Life Center. A private burial will be held Thursday morning at Liberty Cemetery.
