James (Jim) H. Maxwell, 78, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that he was called home on February 24, 2026.
He grew up in Appomattox, Virginia, graduating from Appomattox High School in 1967. Jim was a proud Navy veteran, serving in the Navy's least known Brown Water Navy Unit called Stabron 20. The boats were the fastest in Vietnam and he served on STAB Unit 24019. The unit is virtually unknown, but those who served in Stabron 20 are still brothers today. After his tour in Vietnam, he stayed in the Navy, and after serving his country with courage and honor he retired in July 1989 as Chief Boatswain Mate. He dedicated several years as a valued government employee.
Jim lived a life defined by integrity and love. Jim found joy in hunting, fishing, and sitting around a bonfire with family and friends. Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; son, John "Robby" Maxwell (LeighAnn); granddaughter, Camery Maxwell; stepdaughter, Lisa Medcalf; brother, Charles Maxwell; and stepsister, Georgia Jones.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Wounded Warrior Program.
There will be a memorial service for James at a future date.
