James W. Franklin Sr., 88, of Old Courthouse Road, Appomattox, died Sunday morning November 16, 2014 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Thelma Bryant Franklin.
James was born November 21, 1925 in Appomattox County a son of the late Lizzie Lewis and Luther Franklin. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. James was a veteran and served on the USS Intrepid during World War II. Returning from the service he went to work for J.E. Sears, Inc. as a carpenter. In the early 1950's he built Franklin's Service Center in Vera and operated the business until December 1979. He was member of New Hope Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and sang in the choir for many years.
He is survived by his daughter, Alice Faye Burks and her husband, James of Vera; eight grandchildren, Belinda Moore and Raymond, Jamie Franklin and Teresa, Heather Franklin, Chad Franklin and Melinda, Roxanne Callahan and Chris, Toni Ranson and Brandon, J. B. Burks and Megan, and Matt Burks; 12 great-grandchildren, Shayla and Dana Woods, Dawn Garrett, Katlyn Millner, Kirsten, Jack, Tyler and Andrew Franklin, Ashton Callahan, Abigail Ranson, Alexi and Hailey Burks; three great-great-grandchildren, Bentley Woods, Chloe Stanley, and Ryan Funk; and three daughters-in-law, Neville Franklin, Geneva Elder and Lisa Franklin.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two sons, James W. (Jimmy) Franklin Jr. and Kenneth Lee Franklin; sisters, Edith F. Beard, Nancy F. Beale and Pauline F. Mottley; and brothers, Harold Franklin, Eugene Franklin and Bobby Franklin.
The family wishes to acknowledge the care given to James during his illness by Dr. Richard Miller and the staff at Blue Ridge Internal Medicine, Centra Hospice of Farmville and his care giver, Kandel Berry, and special thanks to Rev. Moore for his dedication and many visits to James.
Funeral services will be held 2p.m. Wednesday November 19, 2014 at New Hope Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Ron Moore. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors accorded by American legion Post #104 and V.F.W. #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and at other times at his residence.
