James A. “Big Jim” Connelly, Sr., of Gladys, VA, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the remarkable age of 101. Born in Campbell County, VA, on March 29, 1924, he was the son of the late Russell Connelly and Maggie Thomas Connelly. He was the husband of the late Ada Mae Jackson Connelly.
Jim owned and operated two farms on Bear Creek Road in Gladys. He was a member of Kedron Baptist Church and served his country as a World War II veteran.
He is survived by a son, James A. Connelly, Jr. and wife, Ava Jane of Brookneal; three great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by a special niece, Linda McConnell; and a loyal friend and neighbor, Glenn Harrison, who came to his aide countless times through the years.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Connelly Wheeler; a grandson, Tom Wheeler; one brother, Russell Connelly Jr.; and three sisters, Elna Rose, Hazel Gholson, and Shirley Koss.
Jim found joy in tending his garden and generously shared it with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, a pastime he first learned during his Army days, and carried with him throughout his life.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Jo Ann Walker for the exceptional care she provided to Jim, and to the many friends and neighbors whose visits and kindness brought comfort and support.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Kedron Baptist Church in Gladys, officiated by Pastor Jacob Warren.
The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
