James Allen Smith, 84, of Redfield Rd., Appomattox, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at his residence.
Born in Mullins, SC, on December 6, 1925, he was a son of the late James Whiteford and Bertha Lewis Smith. Jim was a graduate of Clemson University with a B.S. in Animal Science and a retired County Extension Agent for Appomattox County. He was a US Army veteran, serving his country during WW II and the Korean War. He was an active member of Memorial United Methodist in Appomattox, as well as, serving the Methodist church on both the district and conference levels. He was a former member of the Board of Directors for Farmers Bank and a member of the Appomattox Lion Club and Monroe Lodge #301 A.F. & A.M. He was an active member of the State and National County Agents Association and the Central Virginia Ex-P.O.W. Chapter. Jim enjoyed spending many hours working in his garden.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nelwyn O'Brien Smith; two sons, Allen Smith and his wife, Kelly of Pamplin and Blair Smith of Appomattox; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Melissa Smith; and a brother, Lewis B. Smith of Urbanna.
He was preceded in death by a half-sister, Anne Smith Paxton.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 2, 2010, in Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Russell Cheatham. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V.F.W. #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., today, Wed., Sept. 1, at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
