GLADSTONE – John Gordon Payne, Sr., 86, of 1264 Payne Place died Monday, November 20, 2006 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Clara Glover Payne.
Born in Nelson County, October 10, 1920, he was a son of the late Francis Marion and Bessie Walton Payne. Gordon was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Clinton Masonic Lodge # 73 A.F. & A.M., Amherst; The International Order of Oddfellows 398 and Buckingham V.F.W. Post. He was a retired farmer and retired employee of the C&O Railroad and proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Payne Banton and her husband, George R. of Amherst; two sons, Lynn F. Payne and his wife, Norma of Chesapeake, John G. Payne, Jr. and his wife, Sue of Gladstone; six grandchildren; a great granddaughter, Catherine McClain White; a sister, Mrs. Mary Payne Strickland of Gladstone; two brothers, Joseph D. Payne of Blue Ridge and Claiborne Payne of Gladstone.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ida P. Watts and three brothers, Marion, Eugene and Walter Payne.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm, Friday, November 24, 2006 at Mineral Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Odell Coggins. Burial will follow in the Payne Family Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post #104.
The family will receive friends in the church from 12:00 – 1:30 pm the day of the service and other times at his residence.
