Joseph Pitzer (J.P.) Johnson, Jr. 87, of Appomattox, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 in Lynchburg.

Born February 11, 1924, He was a son of the late Joseph P. Johnson, Sr., and Eula Smith Johnson. He was preceded in death by brothers Ralph W. Johnson and Harold D. Johnson and a sister, Alice Johnson. J.P. was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox and a retired employee of Babcock and Wilcox.

J.P. is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Hazel Kress Johnson, a son, Joseph S. and his wife Debra Johnson, a daughter, Becky and her husband Phillip Asal, of Farmville, a sister, Shirley J. Martin and her husband, Milton, of Concord, a brother, Garland F. Johnson, of Rustburg, four granddaughters, Heather Marcus, and her husband Joey, Angela Johnson, Denise Mozingo, and her husband Michael, and Meredith Koebel and her husband Brandon, and three great-grandsons Tyler, Caleb and Nolan.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Appomattox Health and Rehab Center, Lynchburg General Hospital, English Hall at Virginia Baptist Hospital, special friends, Marion Rose Garrett, Brenda Thomas, neighbors, family, and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday May 11, 2011 at the funeral home with the Rev. Rusty Small and the Rev. Ernie Lucas officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
