Obituary

Hugh Elliott ( Papa H.E.) Carwile, Jr., 89 of Rosser Mill Road, Pamplin, VA died Monday August 4, 2014 at Centra Southside Hospital in Farmville. He was the husband of the late Nancy Welch Carwile.

H.E. was born in Prince Edward Co. September 11, 1924 a son of the late Gladys Gilliam and Hugh Elliott Carwile, Sr. He was a member of Spring Creek Baptist Church where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and the Cemetery Board. H.E. was a Grade "A" Dairy Farmer and served on the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors for 35 years, fourteen years as chairman of the board. He served the Army 78th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He was the first scout to cross the Rhine River using the Ramagen Bridge during the battle of the Bulge. H.E. received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge.

H.E. is survived by his children, Bobby Carwile and wife, Linda of Calvin, OK; Edna C. Francis of Appomattox; Gerald Carwile and wife, Debbie; Steve Carwile all of Pamplin and Jeanne Carrington of Richmond; 16 Grandchildren, 15 Great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Herbert Carwile of Appomattox and a sister, Shirley C. Morris and husband, Claude of Buckingham, special son-in law & daughter-in-law, Bill and Ellen Pettus, brother-in-law, Carrol B. Welch and wife, Joyce; two sisters-n-law, Virginia Welch and Shirley Welch. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Pettus, grandson, Will Pettus; great-granddaughter, Violet Carwile, great-grandsons, David & Raphael Carwile and a son-in-law, Bill Francis.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M.Thursday August 7, 2014 at Spring Creek Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Paul D. Kvanicka. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V.F.W. #9855 combined honor guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
