Helen Smith Wheeler, 91, of Oakleigh Avenue, Appomattox, died Friday, January 22, 2016, at her residence. She was the loving wife of Ben D. Wheeler for 67 years.
Born in Appomattox County, Va., on July 21, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Mary Purdum and Sidney Guy Smith. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Rebecca Wheeler of Virginia Beach and Thomas and Gail Wheeler of Richmond; a daughter and son-in-law, Louise W. and Herbert Gordon of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, John Gordon and wife, Jennifer and Lauren Wheeler both of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Lydia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Helen's caregivers, Karen Franklin and Stephanie Johnson for their wonderful care of Helen.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, January 28, 2016, at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Russell Cheatham. A private family burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and at other times at the residence.
