Helen Booker Bumgarner Lawson, 87, of Hummingbird Lane, Spout Spring, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017, in Valley View Assisted Living. Twice married, she is survived by her second husband, Thurman E. Lawson.
Born in Lynchburg, Va., on November 4, 1929, she was a daughter of the late John Carter Booker and Virgie Smith Booker Guard. She retired from G. E. after 25 years of service. Helen was a member of Reedy Spring Baptist Church, Concord Seniors, Rebekah Lodge #52, Woodmen of the World, and Winston Cup Racing Wives Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband she is survived by two daughters, Betty Wilkins (Gordon) of Forest and Linda Lampman-Ebert (Hugh) of Columbia, S. C.; a son, Kenneth Bumgarner (Patty) of Amherst three step-children, Michael Lawson (Carolyn) of Spout Spring, Rodney Lawson (Donna) of Concord, Pam Mann (William) of Appomattox; a sister, Frances West (Marc) of Charlotte, N. C.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Rex Bumgarner.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Reedy Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Dan Davis with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence.
The family expresses much gratitude to the staff and residents of Valley View Retirement Community, especially for those who loved and cared for mom on a daily basis. Our appreciation goes to Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their care over the past two weeks.
