Hazel Edna Mays, 74, of St. Pauls, NC and formerly of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, September 6, 2006. H. Larry Mays, Sr., her husband of more than fifty years, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sister, Billie Mae Massie, and her husband, Tommy, of Manakin-Sabot and her children, Bertha Johnson, of Lynchburg, Alice Mays, of Lynchburg, H. Larry Mays, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Lancaster, PA; Nina Patricia Davis, and her husband, Billie, of St. Pauls, NC; and, James Mays of Lynchburg. Her beloved grandchildren, Jim Akers of Brooklyn, NY; Lelia Mays, of Lynchburg; Amy Bethard of Brooklyn, NY; Jonathan Bethard, of Knoxville, TN; Becky Passmore, and her husband, Phil, of Hope Mills, NC; Tina Balyeat, and her husband, Joel, of Clarksville, TN; Scott Davis of San Diego, CA; Sean Davis of Edna, TX; Brittany Mays of Covington, mourn her death. Her great-grandchildren are Amanda Passmore, Michael Balyeat, Andrew Balyeat, and Audriona Balyeat.
Hazel mothered her children and grandchildren with tenacity, a sense of humor, a love for the beauty found in flowers and birds, a generosity of spirit, and excellent culinary skills. She valued education and made sure each of her children graduated from high school by setting an example as an avid reader with an intense interest in word puzzles of any kind. Her friendship was counted upon as loyal and true. Her work ethic was dependable and steadfast.
Her life will be celebrated during the viewing at Robinson Funeral Home in Appomattox, from 6:30 p.m until 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening.
The funeral followed by interment will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Piney Ridge United Methodist Church in Pamplin.
