Obituary

Harry Thomas Ferguson, Jr., 94, of Old Courthouse Rd, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Mary Ellen McCloud Ferguson for 71 years.

Born in Appomattox, Va., on May 8, 1929, he was the son of the late Harry Thomas Ferguson, Sr., and Ada Carter Ferguson. In his earlier days, Harry was employed by Norfolk Southern Railroad Company and then by Transcontinental Gas and Pipeline, now Williams.

Harry was a faithful lifetime member of New Hope Baptist Church where he served on various committees and was co-chairman of the New Hope Cemetery. He was a charter member of the Appomattox Rescue Squad where he served for 35 years. Harry was a member of the New Hope Hunting Club where he spent many hours in his younger days hunting and socializing. He was also a member of the Appomattox Lions Club.

Harry enjoyed gardening, hunting and especially adored his grandchildren. He believed in helping others in need and always said everyone deserves a second chance.

He leaves behind to honor his memory two children, Wanda F. Doss and husband, Dennis, and Larry T. Ferguson and wife, Tammy all of Appomattox; two grandchildren, Travis Ferguson and wife, Whitney, and Eric Ferguson and wife, Katherine; four great-grandchildren, Ava Beckhouse, Chase Beckhouse, Vera Ferguson, and Evelyn Ferguson; and a grandson-in-law, Chris Beckhouse.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Wayne Ferguson and a granddaughter, Dana Doss Beckhouse.

A funeral service will be held 2 pm, Sunday November 26, 2023, at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Ron Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the residence.

The family wishes to express how grateful they are to Mary Jones, Freda Patterson, Laura Carter, Vanessa Hudson, and Lynell Massie for all the wonderful care they gave Harry over the past several years. He loved and adored each one of them.
