Harriette Powell Cunningham, 97, of Appomattox, passed away on June 26, 2010. Born in Dinwiddie County on October 4, 1912, she was the daughter of Fannie Royal Powell and Edward Thomas Powell. She is survived by her son, Marshall and his wife, Fay; granddaughter, Sarah Ann; daughter, Ann and her husband, Dr. Robert Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Marshall Cunningham and grandson, Edward Marshall Cunningham.
She attended Blackstone College and received her teaching credentials from Harrisonburg State Teachers College, now James Madison University. She began her teaching career in Amherst County and was a long time fifth grade teacher at Appomattox Primary School. Before moving her membership to Memorial United Methodist Church, she was a member of Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for over forty years. Always active in her community, she was a life member of the Parent Teacher Organization, the Retired Teachers Association, the United Methodist Women, and an honorary member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was devoted to her family and friends and will always be remembered with love.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 28, 2010 at Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bruce Johnson with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
