Concord: Glover Hunter Jones, Jr., 87, of 4170 Spring Mill Road, died Monday, July 31, 2006 at his residence. He was the husband of Margaret Crawley Jones.
Born in Campbell County, September 7, 1918, he was the son of the late Glover Hunter Jones, Sr. and Virginia Purdum Jones. Hunter was educated in Campbell County Schools, received his B. A. from Lynchburg College and his M. Ed. from UVA. He served Campbell County for 42 years, starting his career in 1940 as a teacher, and serving the school system until 1973 as both a School Administrator and Superintendent of Schools. In 1974, he began his first of three terms as Treasurer of Campbell County. Hunter was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where for 50 years he was a Deacon and taught the Adult Men's Sunday School class. He was a life member of Reedy Spring Masonic Lodge #203 A.F. & A.M of Concord. In 1988, he was Grand Master of Masons in Virginia. He was very active in the Lynchburg Valley of Scottish Rite as well as a number of other Masonic bodies. He was also active in a number of civic organizations in the Concord area. Hunter served his country in the US Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post #163 of Rustburg where he served in various capacities.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, G.H. Jones, III and his wife, Emily of Concord and Dr. Samuel Moseley Jones and his wife, Carol of Fairfax; two sisters, Annie Laurie J. Cardwell and Virginia J. Canada both of Concord; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Hunter Jones of Concord, Melissa Jones Hale and her husband, Jason of Lynchburg, and Caitlyn Crawley Jones of Fairfax and two great grandsons, Andrew Hunter Jones and Harris Daniel Jones.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 7:00 pm, Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank Casper and the Rev. Nathanael Habel. The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 4:00 – 6:30 pm.
A graveside service with Masonic Rites will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, at Earlys Chapel United Methodist Church, Concord.
