George Russell Miller of Bent Creek, VA passed away peacefully on January 15th at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was surrounded by family and passed with his beloved wife of 63 years, Anne Taylor Miller, at his side.
Russell was born on October 20, 1928 in Roanoke, VA. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Virginia in 1951 and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the Nashville Night Law School in 1959. He was most proud of his United States Naval Reserve service from 1951-1953. He served in the Korean War Theatre of Operations for six months in 1952. Prior to moving to Bent Creek in the early 90's, Russell and his family lived in various cities throughout the United States, but they primarily resided in Bellevue, WA for some 30 years. During that time, he was active in the Life and Health business as General Manager of the Phoenix Companies, Seattle, WA office covering the states of Washington and Idaho. A life-long Presbyterian, he and his family were members of the Bellevue First Presbyterian Church. Upon moving to Bent Creek, he and his wife affiliated with Appomattox Court House Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife Anne, Russell is survived by three children: Deborah Adair Hayes and her husband James William Hayes III of Charlottesville, VA; Ashley Taylor Miller and his wife Laurie Kay Miller of Yakima, WA, and Anne Russell Miller and her husband Dr. Floyd Miller of Chandler, AZ. Russell and Anne were blessed with six grandchildren: Kate Miller Loeb (Bryan) and Adam Miller of Yakima, WA; Christopher Miller of Ferrum, VA, and Nicholas Miller of Omaha, NE; Lucy Hayes and Jackson Hayes of Charlottesville, VA. Their great-grandchildren are Emerson, Dallas, and Decker Loeb of Yakima, WA.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the University of Virginia Medical Center for the gracious care Russell received while there. We would also like to thank Dr. Andrew Wolf for the compassionate and loving care he has provided these last twenty years. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Appomattox Court House Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 85, Appomattox, VA 24522.
A graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Baptist Church, 5440 James River Road, Bent Creek, VA on Friday, January 23rd at 2:00 p.m. Friends are invited to join the family at home immediately following the service at 5722 James River Road.
