Fred Herbert Jones, 86, of Purdum Mill Road, Appomattox, died while working on his farm, Wednesday, February 10, 2016. He was the husband of Betty Scruggs Jones and the late Annie Ruth McFadden Jones.
Born in Appomattox County, Va., on May 12, 1929, he was a son of the late Eva Nash and Jesse Herbert Jones. He was a lifetime member of Central Baptist Church. In 1961, he started Fred Jones Well Company. He also owned and operated AJ Skate World in Appomattox, Altavista, and Brookneal and was a building contractor and land developer. Fred had a love of farming, which he stayed involved in his entire life. At the age of 86, he was still operating Jones Farm.
In addition to his wife he is survived by four children, Freda Layne and husband Jack, Freddie R. Jones both of Appomattox, Angie Jones of Lynchburg, and Fred H. (Herbie) Jones, II of Appomattox; two step-sons, Jerry Scruggs and wife, Sandra and Jeff Scruggs and his girlfriend, Erin Finch both of Spout Spring; three step-grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler and Lexi Scruggs; two sisters, Evelyn Beasley of Lynchburg and Vivian Ramsey of Phenix; brother-in-law, Bernard Pillow of Phenix; sister-in-law, Dale Jones of Appomattox; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Jones and a sister, Marion Pillow.
A funeral service will be held 11a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2016, in Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Alfred Jones, Rev. George Kreidel, and Rev. Paul Kvasnicka. A private family burial will follow.
The family will receive friends at the home.
