Fred Donald "Bookie" Johnson, 77, of Horseshoe Road, died Wednesday, April 25, 2018. He was the loving husband of Donna Wright Johnson for 58 years.

Born in Appomattox County, May 31, 1940, he was a son of the late Earlie Mae Davidson and Bernice Aubrey Johnson. Bookie was a member of Bible Baptist church where he served as treasurer for over 40 years. He was the owner of Best Furniture Galleries. Bookie was involved with Dixie Youth sports for over 20 years and an avid Raider Sports fan. He sponsored and coached men's softball teams and was a part of the Duck Pin Bowling League. Papa adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they adored their Papa.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Kathy Parris and husband, Donald of Concord, Susan Smith and husband, Doug and Paul Johnson and wife, Tamara all of Forest; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Faye "Sis" Pierce and one sister-in-law, Edna Goad Johnson both of Appomattox; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Aubrey Floyd "Dick" Johnson.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Bible Baptist Church with Pastor Robert E. Lee, Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr., Pastor Jerry Boyce, Pastor Paul Kvasnicka and Pastor Jonathan Watson officiating. Burial will take place at Old Herman Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Friday, April 27, 2018, at Bible Baptist Church and other times at the residence.

Having contracted Polio at age three months, Bookies' wish was to have contributions sent to St. Jude's or Shriners Hospital for Children.
