Obituary

Florence B. Whiting, 95, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but was reared in Piqua, Ohio where she graduated from Piqua Central High School. Shortly thereafter she moved to Cleveland to start a career in government service with the Army ordnance and Veterans Administration. During a visit to Washington, D.C., and Howard University she met her future husband, Thomas J. Whiting which marriage was only terminated by his death in 2003, over 50 years later.

Mrs. Whiting was one of the first blacks to integrate the advertising business when she, with the help of the Cleveland Urban League, was hired by the Cleveland-based advertising agency, Fuller, Smith and Ross.

She continued to be employed by FSR until her husband joined the Foreign Service and they moved to Washington, D.C. While a Foreign Service Wife she had an opportunity to live in New Delhi, India and Nairabi, Kenya before they retired to Fairfax, VA. Mrs. Whiting was active right up until the end and enjoyed what she called her "Three B's" Bingo, Bowling and Bridge.

She was survived by a dear friend and caregiver Bobbi Johnson of Promise Land Road, Appomattox.

An inurnment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
