Obituary

Frank Calvin Tanner, Sr. of Concord, Va., died on February 7, 2018 surrounded by his family. He and his wife, Stella Thomas Tanner had been married for 63 years.

Calvin, age 84, was born in Appomattox County, the son of the late Thomas H. Tanner and Hula Cunningham Tanner. He was a lifetime member of Hebron Baptist Church where he lovingly served in every capacity, Sunday School teacher, adult choir, all committees, and was a lifetime member of the Board of Deacons. He was ordained a deacon on December 16, 1961.

In addition to his wife, Calvin is survived by his two children and their families, Catherine Tanner Brown and her husband, Jed of Concord, Va. and Frank C. Tanner, Jr. and his wife, Beth of Pearisbug, Va.; his five grandchildren, Hampton Ballard, Nathan Thomas Tanner, David Carlyle Brown, Reid Ballard; and his only granddaughter, Diana Catherine Brown Weeks and her husband, Rodney Weeks; his most beloved great-granddaughter, Kamryn Adair Weeks and very special great-grandson, Tanner Wayne Weeks. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Anne Thomas Stratton of Concord, Va.; his brother-in-law, Vincent Russell of Moseley, Va.; his nephews, Steve Tanner and Patricia, Gary Tanner and wife, Angela all of Concord, Va.; and a huge loving family of nieces, nephews and cousins, and an awesome church family.

In addition to his parents, Calvin was predeceased by his brother, Hugh Tanner and sister-in-law, Shirley Tanner; his parents-in-law, Helen Drinkard and Lyle B. Thomas; uncle-in-law, Frank Thomas; sisters-in-law, Faye T. Russell and Charlene T. Raddin; and brothers-in-law, Kelly D. Stratton, Ray B. Thomas and Richard D. Raddin.

Calvin retired as Vice President from J. E. Jamerson & Sons in Appomattox, Virginia, after 46 years. He took pride in knowing that he helped build the Company from its early formation to the large outstanding Company it is today. This gave him the opportunity to assist hundreds of friends with their building projects. He always felt his life had been blessed by being a part of this Company that he loved, and especially for having Mr. "Dutch" Jamerson as his mentor during his career.

One of Calvin's great loves was baseball and he was an outstanding pitcher known as "Curve Ball Tanner" during his earlier years. He played baseball during high school and for many years later with the Appomattox and Altavista Sky Line Leagues. After his discharge from the Army, he played with the Lynchburg City League for several years until they were discontinued. In 2012, he was inducted into the Appomattox Hall of Fame.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 9th from 7 until 8:30 at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

The funeral will be held at Hebron Baptist Church at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 10th officiated by the Rev. Tom Walker and Rev. Sammy Gunter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Those wishing to make memorials, the family requests donations in his honor be made to Hebron Baptist Church New Addition Building Fund, PO Box 871, Concord, VA 24538 or to the charity of your choice.
