Everette Wayne Phelps, Sr., 71, of Isbell Street, Appomattox, died Monday, May 1, 2017, at his residence.
Born January 22, 1946, in Lynchburg, Va., he was a son of the late Audrey Williamson and Havilah Everette Phelps. For over 50 years, along with his mother, father, and sons; he worked, owned and operated Phelps Garage, Auto Repair, and Towing. Wayne was a member of Red Oak Baptist Church, the Appomattox Historical Society and an honorary member of the American Legion Post #104. He was the Commander of the Appomattox Rangers/Courthouse Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #1733 participating in many Civil War re-enactments and was involved in raising beef cattle on his family farm.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Daniel Phelps; three sons and daughters-in-law, E. Wayne Phelps, Jr. and Karen, John D. Phelps and Beth, and Benji W. Phelps and Audrey; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Deborah P. Jamerson all of Appomattox; a special friend, Virginia Lee Sweeney; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Red Oak Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Barker. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
A private family burial will be held at a later date in Old Herman Cemetery.
