Emmett Filmore Tweedy, Sr., 86, of Concord, died Friday, July 9, 2010, at The Elderly Place, 1504 Edley Place, Lynchburg.
Born in Campbell County, on April 16, 1924, he was the son to the late John Wesley Tweedy and Annie Burton Cardwell Tweedy. He was a member of Early's Chapel United Methodist Church. In 1950, he married Martha Elizabeth "Beth" Keesee. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the European Theater Headquarters in Hoechst, Germany during World War II. He spent his career farming the family property in Sherwill and was widely known for his expertise with livestock. Mr. Tweedy was a respected member of the community, generous to all who asked him for assistance. He attended livestock sales every Monday at the Lynchburg Stock Market. An avid baseball fan, he regularly attended home games of the Lynchburg Hillcats. He hosted the Long Mountain Hunting Club on his property for many years and enjoyed socializing at their annual dinners.
Mr. Tweedy is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet T. and Thomas D. Tinnin, III, Lynchburg; Monica T. and John C. Kallop, Middletown, NJ; and Cindy T. and Carl A. Merriett, Aiken, SC; one son, E. Filmore "Fil" Tweedy, Jr. and Gloria Totty, Lynchburg; one sister, Mrs. Lucille T. Winebarger, Lynchburg; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Annie Mae Tweedy, Hampton; one brother-in-law, T. P. Keesee, Jr., Petersburg; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Beth Keesee Tweedy and his brother, John Burton Tweedy.
Visitation is at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Robinson Funeral Home, 667 Court Street, Appomattox, with services at 11:00 am led by the Rev. Frank J. Casper and Rev. George D. Hatmaker at Robinson Funeral Home; burial will follow in Concord Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and Veterans of Foreign Wars #9855 combined honor guard.
