Obituary

Concord: Susie Elizabeth (Beth) Coleman Reynolds died Thursday, January 18, 2007 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born on the Coleman family farm on Blackfoot Creek in Appomattox County on November 8, 1912 she was the oldest of nine children born to Royal Judson and Mary Eva Martin Coleman.
She entered Longwood College in 1932, received a teaching certificate in 1934, and began teaching in a one-room school, Buck Hollow, in Bent Creek, VA that same year. There she met and married Percy James Reynolds. Once married, she was not allowed to teach. In 1938, she and Percy opened a store in Concord. They ran the store together until Percy's death in 1957 and she continued to run it alone until 1962 when it closed as a result of the widening of Route 460. Beth then returned to teaching at Concord Elementary School, and began work on her bachelor's degree, which she received in 1972. At the celebration of this achievement the cake was decorated with Longwood College: 1932 to 1972. She continued to teach at Concord until her retirement in 1978. Thereafter, she remained active baking her wonderful rolls, which she gave to the sick and shut-in, to neighbors, to family, to friends and strangers. She was an active member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the Campbell County Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed sewing, making quilts, cooking, and visiting her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons and their wives, James Leon and Janie Reynolds of Chesterfield, and Lawrence Judson and Margaret Reynolds of Richmond; three grandchildren, Joy Lynn Elizabeth Reynolds, Lawrence Halsted Reynolds and Susanna Coleman Reynolds; two brothers and their wives, Ralph and Betsy Lee Coleman and Kenneth and Dot Coleman; a sister and her husband, Polly and Sam Inge; a sister-in-law, Cleo Coleman and many nieces, nephews, former pupils, friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 21, 2007 in Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tim Earnhardt. Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home Saturday, from 5 - 7:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church, PO Box 138, Concord, VA 24538.
