Elizabeth "Betty" Ward Torrence

Elizabeth “Betty” Ward Torrence, 83, of River Ridge Road, Appomattox, passed away on December 12, 2025, at Babcock Manor. She was the wife of the late Frank Allen Torrence.

Born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, on August 5, 1942, she was the daughter of Elsie Keeton and Eugene Joseph Ward, Sr. She was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church where she served on numerous committees including chair of the Benevolence Committee. Her long-time occupation as a beautician allowed her to foster many great relationships. Betty also served in the children’s department for 18 years. She devoted many hours to visiting and volunteering in the area nursing homes where she was known as Bingo Betty. She received the Appomattox Citizen of the Year for her dedicated commitment to the community.

Betty is survived by six children, Melinda Mitchell and husband, Rick of Mechanicsville, Thomas Davis and Cheryl Mullins, David Davis and wife, Teresa all of Spout Spring, Donna Henderson and husband, Mike, Delores Jones and husband, Kenneth, Linda Almond and husband, Donnie all of Appomattox; a daughter-in-law, Janice Torrence of Spout Spring; three sisters-in-law, Lee Nell Ward of Farmville, Joyce Ward of VA Beach, and Ann Ward of Farmville; special friend, Luther Lewis; 19 grandchildren; and 21 plus great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Frank Torrence; a granddaughter, Brittaney Leigh Mitchell; four brothers, Eugene Ward, Jr., Robert Alton Ward, Edward Paul Ward and wife, Joyce, and Lawrence Barrington Ward; and two sisters, Nell Estelle Sanderson and husband, Jesse, Martha Scott Covington and husband, Melvin.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, December 14, 2025, at Liberty Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Dr. Rick Mitchell and Rev. Dr. Rusty Small. The burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 6 pm to 8 pm.

The family would like to thank the staff of Babcock Manor and James River Hospice for their care of Betty.
