Dorothy Ferguson Carter, 83, of Oakville Road of Appomattox danced her way straight to heaven on Monday, January 19, 2015. She was the wife of the late James Otis Carter.

Born in Appomattox County, Va., on October 21, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Viola Smith and Edward Iverson Ferguson. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and retired from Amelia Dress Company after 32 years. She loved quilting, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, watching the sunset, but most of all spending time with her family. She had a smile like sunshine, a wicked sense of humor and a heart of gold. Mama and Nanny, "Our Heart", will be so missed.

She is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn Swanberg and husband, Jerry of Appomattox, Polly Hansen and husband, Don of Mechanicsville, and Robbie Covington and her late husband Michael of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Bobby (Ann) Swanberg, Chris (Heather) Swanberg, Brandy (Aaron) Kent, and Beth (Ricky) Pippins. Thirteen of her greatest joys were her great grandchildren…Abigail, Carter, Mason, Conner, Raegan, Ryleigh, Andrew, Ayden, Austin, Michaela, Lucas, Kaitlin, and Landon. And also five sisters, Alma Almond, Leola Henderson, Merlie Reynolds, Shirley Childress, and Virginia Saville and one brother, Eddie Ferguson.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Liberty Baptist Church by Rev. Jerry Childress. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
