Doris Cawthorne Harris, 89, of Virginia Beach died January 1, 2018 at 1:05 a.m., at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Va. from complications of dementia.

Born on September 12, 1928 in Lynchburg Va., she was raised in Appomattox County, Va. and graduated from Appomattox County High School. Doris lived in Virginia Beach, Va., where she was a homemaker.

She was predeceased in death by her parents, Samuel Dewey Cawthorne and Rachel Perdue Cawthorne; a brother, James Edwin Cawthorne; and her husband, Raymond Lyle Harris.

She is survived by son Michael Cawthorne Harris and wife Gail of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; a daughter, Nancy Jane Harris Hobson of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Jessica Harris Folan and husband Sean, Paul Harris Hobson, and Sarah-Jane Ruffin and husband Christopher; great-grandchildren, Michael Paul Gill-Hobson, Chloe Ann Folan, and Liam Patrick Folan; and one nephew, James Edwin Cawthorne Jr.

A graveside funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 4, 2018, at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Ron Moore. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 2:30 p.m. until time of service.
