Donald Alan Bates, 58, of Swan Rd., Pamplin, died Friday, August 27, 2010, in UVA Medical Center. He was the husband of Cathy Baldwin Bates.
Born in Newport News, on January 12, 1952, he was a son of Clara Ethel Taylor Bates of Appomattox and the late Charles T. Bates. Donald was a member of Elon Baptist Church and an avid Minnesota Viking's, UVA, and NASCAR fan. He was a former employee of Thomasville Furniture and a self-employed painting contractor.
In addition to his wife and mother he is survived by a son, Derek Bates and wife, Luda of Pittsburgh, PA; three daughters, Amy Bates, Andrea Morris both of Concord, and Ashley Sandman and husband, Matt of Appomattox; four grandchildren, Kayleigh Morris, Caleb Bates, Abiel Bates and expected baby Sandman; two brothers, Carroll Vandegrift and wife, Wanda of Pamplin and Thomas Bates and wife, Brenda of Appomattox; and a sister, Sandra Burden and husband, Larry of Taft CA.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Elon Baptist Church, Pamplin, by the Rev. Josh Tompkins with burial following in Pamplin Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
