David Arthur Notestein, 95, of Morning Star Road, died Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at the Woodland of Farmville. He was the loving husband of Jean Fay Notestein.
Born in Bradenton, FL, June 9, 1922, he was a son of the late Anna Elizabeth Bowles and Dwight Edison Notestein. David was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church. He served his country in the United States Navy during WWII, Korea and the Vietnam wars and retired after 27 years as a Master Chief. David was the owner and operator of Maude's Restaurant, Parkway Restaurant and Parkway Grocery from 1966-1980. Not one for shying away from work, David continued to help his son, Donald, run Parkway Grocery into his late eighties.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Donald Earl Notestein and wife, Patsy, Florence Elaine Grishaw and husband, David, all of Appomattox, and Daniel Lee Notestein and wife, Donna, of Blacksburg; three grandchildren, Jessica and Edward Mason, Jennifer and John Shaner, Julie Gutherie; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; special friends, Peter and Bea Fore and Bill and Linda Parson.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; John A. Notestein, Edison Notestein and Ira Notestein.
A funeral service will be held, 11 a.m., Friday, August 4, 2017 at Evergreen Baptist Church by Pastor Jeff Slaughter with burial to follow at Evergreen cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and VFW #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends one hour prior at the church.
