Cleo Reynolds Coleman, 97, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully at home on June 17, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was born on December 13, 1917, in Appomattox County, Va. to the late Jesse Herbert and Alice Hagood Reynolds.
In addition to her parents, Cleo was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, R. Martin Coleman; brothers, Marvin G. Reynolds and Lonnie C. Reynolds Sr.; and sisters, Katie R. Martin and Corean R. Davidson.
Cleo graduated from Appomattox High School in 1934 and received a teaching certificate from The State Teachers College in 1936. She taught for four years, beginning in a one room school house. After a couple of decades focused on being a full time wife and mother, Cleo returned to Longwood College for a Bachelors' Degree in Education, and continued her passion by teaching at Concord Elementary School for 21 years, until her retirement in 1983. After retirement, Cleo spent over 20 years as an active member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association.
Cleo was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Appomattox, VA. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women, holding various offices both within her church and district wide. Utilizing her God given talent for teaching, Cleo was a Sunday School teacher for 81 years, teaching regularly up until a month before her death.
Cleo is survived by her children, daughter, Brenda C. Isaac and husband Steve of Charleston, W.Va. and son, J. Bruce Coleman and wife Judy of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandsons, Matthew O. Fidler and wife Sharry of Richmond, and Patrick M. Fidler and wife Kristy of Charleston, W.Va.; and her three precious great-grandchildren, Liliana, Benjamin and Coleman Fidler. She is also survived by her sister, Sallie R. Martin of Floyd; brother, Garland H. Reynolds and wife Rita from Los Angeles, Calif.; brother-in-law, Kenneth E. Coleman and wife Dot from Appomattox; sisters-in-law, Belle M. Megginson from Appomattox and Betsy Lee Coleman from Lynchburg; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Cleo's wonderful and devoted care giver, Joyce Laronde, who cared for her through her last moments on earth.
A celebration of Cleo's life will be held 11 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2015, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1975 Trinity Road, Concord by the Rev. Larry Mann. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow immediately in the church cemetery.
