Charlotte Gray Selz passed from time into eternity Monday evening, September 26th 2011, of heart failure after a short illness.
She was born in Washington, DC to the late Rixey F. Gray and Ruth Weimer Gray on June 10th, 1927. She volunteered during World War II as a Red Cross ambulance driver at the age of 17, and was married to Bertram Neil Selz in 1951. As a Navy bride, she traveled the world, living in California, Alaska, the Philippines, and Maryland before settling in Virginia in 1964.
Widowed in 1967, she raised her family, working as the assistant to the County Administrator in Campbell County for over 20 years. She was active in the Sunday School, nursery, and missions organizations of Calvary Baptist Church in Concord, VA for many years, and served as board secretary and Dispatcher for the Concord Rescue Squad as long as her health allowed.
Surviving her are her children and their spouses, Lannis and Fay Selz, Bryan and Darlene Selz, and Laurie and Phillip Harris; her granddaughters, Virginia and Victoria Selz; her grandsons and their spouses, Neil and Summer Selz, and Alec and Sarah Selz; and a great-grandchild on the way. Charlotte's sister Evelyn Pinkard predeceased her by only 10 days; she is also survived by her brother-in-law, Kenneth Pinkard; and her niece and nephew and their spouses, Judy and Buddy Ward, and Jeff Pinkard and Jacque Lavelle.
Special thanks to her friends at church and at the Concord Rescue Squad, and to Margaret Jones for their support over the years, and to the staff at The Summit Assisted Living for their care.
Graveside funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m., on Friday, September 30, 2011, in Culpeper National Cemetery, 305 U. S. Avenue, Culpeper, VA.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Charlotte's memory to the Concord Rescue Squad, PO Box 48, Concord, VA 24538 would be appropriate.
