Obituary

Charles Wilmer Loving, Sr., 99, of Lynchburg passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at Bentley Commons Assisted Living Facility. He was the husband of Earlean Ore Loving for 75 years.

Born in Nelson County, Va., on July 15, 1924, he was the son of the late Houston and Mary Moore Bayrd Loving. He was the last of 16 siblings. He grew up in Roseland area of Nelson County where he drove for the school bus system while he was still a student. He would haul apples and peaches across the mountains to New York as a teenage boy. Charles was a WW II veteran of the United States Navy, having served aboard the USS West Virginia. His battleship was present for the surrender in Tokyo Bay, Japan. After returning to Central Virginia, he began his working career with Trailways Bus. He became a patrolman with Lynchburg City Police Department where he served for 16 years and left with the rank of Detective Sergeant. Charles helped take an interest in working with troubled youth and began the Youth Bureau. Upon leaving the LPD, Charles went to Lynchburg Gas Company where he served as Vice President. His retirement job was with Falwell Corporation. He always enjoyed working and serving his community.

Charles never met a stranger and formed many close relationships over the years with his church family at Fort Hill United Methodist Church, his neighbors in their backyard gardens on Navajo Circle, and his numerous golf buddies in and around Lynchburg. He was a lifelong UVA fan, a 32nd Degree Mason with the Scottish Rite, and a member of the American Legion, Lions Club, UCT, and Hill City Lodge for 74 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Charles "Chip" Loving, Jr. and wife, Kathy of Lynchburg, and Mary L. Dickerson and husband, Earl of Appomattox; four grandchildren, Greer D. Harris and husband, David of Appomattox, Tobin J. Dickerson and wife, Meghan of San Marcos, Calif., Zane H. Dickerson and wife, Beth of Cary, N.C., and Marie Markuson of Appomattox; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service with Masonic Rights will be held at 2 pm, on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Fort Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Marc Brown and Rev. Janet Hawkins officiating.
