Obituary

Charlie Bernard Rush, 87, of Appomattox passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018 at the Salem VA Medical Center.

Born in Red House on January 8, 1931, he was the son of the late Charlie Scott and Lucille Reynolds Rush. He was the husband of Barbara Robinson Rush for 62 years.

C.B. was a graduate of Randolph-Henry High School. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict as a radioman on the minesweeper USS Aggressive. He worked as a tobacco farmer and deputy sheriff in his early career, retiring from General Electric in 1988. He immediately went back to work, retiring for the last time, in his early 80s, from Green Front Furniture. C.B. came from a long lineage of carpenters. He could build, make, or fix just about anything. He had an electricians license, and was a member of the Bassmasters, having fished many tournaments. He was also a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and the Masons.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by four daughters, Debbie Rush and Charlene Lawson of Appomattox, Dawn Ferguson of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Tracy Rush of Wilmington, North Carolina; four granddaughters, Rachel Drinkard (Timmy) of Appomattox, Ashley McDowell (Trafton) of Monroe, Courtney Rush (Lizz) of Staunton, and Cameron Sandgren (Dustin) of Lincoln, Nebraska; four great-granddaughters, Whitley and Hallie Drinkard, Blair Sandgren, and Poppy McDowell; six great-grandsons, Charlie and Sully Drinkard, River and Scout McDowell, and Graham and Colin Sandgren; a sister, Rebecca Rush Ellis of Roanoke; three sisters-in law, Katie White (Billy), Peggy Smith (James), and Nadine Robinson; brother-in-law, Ralph Robinson; great aunt, Betty Petty; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Goldie Rush Morrison; brothers-in-law, Jim Ellis and Ted Robinson; sisters-in-law, Erma Leffers and Harriette Robinson; and grandnephews, Robby Funkhouser and Drew Smith.

A celebration of C.B.'s life, conducted by the Reverends Russell Cheatham, Gene Beverly, and Janice Fraser, with Masonic rites by Monroe Lodge 301 of Appomattox, will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, July 22 at Memorial United Methodist Church in Appomattox. A reception will follow. A private burial will take place at Trinity Cemetery in Red House. Please join the family in honoring C.B. by wearing his favorite color, light blue, to the service.

The family would like to thank Tammy Moore of Gentle Shepherd Hospice, and Dr. Jane Brummer and the hospice staff at the Salem VA for their extraordinary loving care of C.B. in his last weeks.
