Carolyne Mays Kelly, 74, of Hill N Dale Drive, Lynchburg, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017. She was the loving wife of N. Jay Kelly, Jr for 48 years. She was born to the late Irene Page Mays and Gilbert Eugene Mays on July 28, 1942 in Appomattox. She graduated from Appomattox High School and Maryland Medical Secretarial School. She worked as a medical secretary for many years and retired from Central Virginia Training Center. After retiring, she enjoyed many years at Lynchburg Nissan as a receptionist. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lynchburg.
She will be remembered for her many musical talents, including a beautiful singing voice. She and Jay shared their talents with a variety of churches during her lifetime beginning with her childhood church, Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox. One of her greatest joys in life was thinking of ways to bring joy to others—always accompanied by her beautiful smile.
She is survived by, in addition to her husband, one sister, Lois Mays, and two brothers and their spouses, Irie and Pam Mays and Monte and Linda Mays all of Appomattox; a sister-in-law, Edna and Charles Forbes, of Belmont, NC, Catherine Forbes, Charles' sister, of Mooresville, NC, one niece, Kimberly Forbes of Mooresville, NC, and five nephews, the Rev. Mark (Kristen) Forbes of Birmingham, AL, Wade (Nicole) Mays of Goode, Josh(Christy) Mays of Madison Heights, Thomas Mays of Richmond, and Zach Mays of Appomattox. Also, surviving are great nieces and nephews—Kayia and Elijah DeVivo, Jack and Kate Forbes, Madeline and Noah Addison Mays, Cedar Mays, Hayden, Parker and Noah Mays. She was blessed to still have uncles and aunts, Ray and June Page of Appomattox, Vernelle Bellon of Baltimore, MD, and Clarine Mays of Appomattox.
A Celebration of her life will be held 3 p.m., Saturday, May 13, 2017 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 605 Clay Street, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Dr. Diane Vie and the Rev. Todd Vie officiating. A private burial will be held at Liberty Cemetery for the family only.
