Appomattox: Betsy Hurt Carter, 70, of Appomattox, passed with grace on Tuesday evening, September 28, 2010 at her residence.
Betsy was the wife of the late Robert Wayne "Boots" Carter, Sr. of Appomattox. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Cecil Porter Hurt and the late Nancy Johnson Hurt of Lynchburg.
Betsy is survived by her four beloved children: Robert Wayne Carter, Jr and wife Stephanie of Appomattox, VA; William Porter Carter of Los Angeles, CA; Elizabeth Carter Norfleet and husband Robert of Richmond, VA; and, Rebecca Carter Booker and husband Malcolm III of Appomattox, VA.
She was also a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren: Courtney Carter, Malcolm Booker
IV, Carter Norfleet, Bryson Carter, Virginia Norfleet, Annah Booker, Claire Norfleet, Peyton Booker, and Cate Booker, each of whom she cherished. Betsy also treasured her many relatives and friends.
Betsy was born in Lynchburg, on January 11, 1940. She was a 1958 graduate of E.C. Glass High School and a 1963 graduate of Longwood College. Following college, Betsy worked in the areas of child and adult protection with the Departments of Social Services for the City of Lynchburg, Henrico County, and Appomattox County. She founded Junior and Senior Volunteers Programs in Appomattox and was named to the Governor's Advisory Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect.
Betsy was an active member of the Appomattox Woman's Club and local and national president of the Longwood College Alumni Association. She served as a member of P.E.O., the Timberlake Garden Club, and the American Heart Association. Betsy also served as a Sunday school teacher for more than twenty years. Betsy was a member of Appomattox Court House Presbyterian Church and had been active in the First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg.
Betsy's children remain humbled and thankful for the thoughtful and tireless efforts and loving kindness of the health care providers who helped "Gam" through her last months.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1215 VES Rd., Lynchburg, VA, on Sunday, October 3, 2010 at 3:00 pm, followed by graveside services at Liberty Cemetery in Appomattox, VA. The Reverend Daniel Dockery and the Reverend John Scholer will be officiating.
Those wishing to make memorials are asked to kindly consider the charity of their choice, in lieu of flowers.
The family praises the Lord, whom Betsy glorified in her life and in her death, for His saving Grace.
