Barney Dorst Jones, 90, of Appomattox, Virginia, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born September 18, 1918, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, to Sylvanus K. and Dora Mae Dorst Jones, he was preceded in death by a sister, Meryl Gertrude Gish, and a brother, Winfred Jones. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nellie NaDean Branham Jones; three children, Billy D. Jones and wife Alice of Houston, Texas; Rev. Charles R. Jones and wife, Sharon of Charlottesville, Virginia; and Brenda J. Putney and husband, Nathan of Appomattox, Virginia; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Barney was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He was a World War II veteran and served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Major. He served in Japan, China, and Guam.
Barney pastored churches in Twentynine Palms, California, as well as Richmond, Salem, and Christiansburg, Virginia. He served as District Treasurer of the Virginia District of the Wesleyan Church for 20 years. While living in Central, South Carolina, he served as business manager and treasurer of Southern Wesleyan University (1967-1976), City Manager of Central (1978-1980), and South Carolina District Governor of the Lion's Club.
Rev. John Williamson will officiate the memorial service at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, at CrossPoint Wesleyan Church, 7619 Timberlake Lake Road, Lynchburg, VA. A military internment will be held for the family on Friday at the Quantico Marine Corps Base.
