Barbara Jane Grubbs Tolbert, 87, of Buckingham passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
Born on October 14, 1938, in Spout Spring, Virginia, Barbara was the daughter of Ernest and Naomi Grubbs. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Shirley Moore; and her brothers, Richard Grubbs, Lyle Grubbs, and Roger Grubbs.
Barbara was a devoted Christian and member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, where she served joyfully for many years as a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader, and Girls in Action (GA) Leader. Her dedication and gentle leadership touched the lives of countless children and families, nurturing their faith and strengthening their walk with God.
She lived a life marked by kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to others. Barbara retired from The Woodland, where she served as an Activities Assistant, bringing joy, companionship, and encouragement to residents through her compassionate spirit.
Above all, Barbara cherished her family. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and friend who found her greatest happiness in time spent with those she loved. Her family was the center of her world, and she offered endless support, wisdom and encouragement throughout her life.
Barbara is survived by her beloved husband, Bernard Tolbert, with whom she would have celebrated 70 years of marriage on October 5, a beautiful testament to enduring love, faith and commitment.
She is also survived by her daughter, Sheila McLean, who provided so much love and care to her mother, and son-in-law, John Norman McLean of Charlottesville, VA; brother-in-law, Robert Moore of Forest, VA and his daughters, Rhonda Moore and Cindy Hazelwood, sister-in-law, Helen Talbert of Dillwyn, VA and her son, Allen Talbert; many nieces and nephews; her daughters of the heart, Faye Bryan, Karen Fowler, Bonita Smith and Donna Weddle; and her dear caregiver and friend of many years, Loreen Johnson, whose faithful care brought comfort and support throughout Barbara’s later years.
Barbara leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, service and strength that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Though her family grieves her loss, they find peace in knowing she is now at rest in the presence of her Lord and Savior.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of English Meadows and Medi Home Hospice for their exceptional care, kindness and support during Barbara’s final journey.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched
