Obituary

Barbara Jean Mayberry, 72, of Promise Land Road, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at her residence. She was the wife of Ralph Emmett Mayberry for 53 years.

Born in Appomattox County, December 28, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Nora Jane Mann and Edward Witt "Jack" Mayberry. Barbara graduated from Appomattox High School, June 8, 1962, and was a former Manager with the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging.

She was known as Barbara Jean and sometimes Bobbie Jean to work colleagues, family and friends. She enjoyed her family, our cats, the breeze in her pine trees, and listening to the Golden Oldies and Big Band music from her youth. Jean also loved a small glass bottle of Pepsi with the peanuts poured directly into the bottle.

Jean worked sewing at the garment factory in Appomattox, Blue Buckle, Armstrong, the Falling River Country Club, the bookstore at the Appomattox Court House National Park, Express Lane in Lynchburg, and was a Girl Scouts/Brownies/Cub Scouts leader to list a few. Her favorite job was as the manager for the Appomattox Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging. Seeing people that participated in the program was a joy for her and she enjoyed planning programs and activities for them.

She was a woman who loved her family, reading, drawing, painting, writing, and singing. Over the years she had written articles for the local paper, entered mystery writing magazine contests, written plays and even a song for her lost beloved holiday of Christmas.

Jean enjoyed talking and socializing and would start up a conversation at a doctor's office, a store or eating out, she didn't care how you looked or who you were. She will be missed and our memories of her good company and humor will always be a comfort to us.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Tracy Renee Mayberry of Appomattox; a sister, Vicki Franklin and husband, Beverley of Appomattox.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Edward Mayberry and Charlie Evan Mayberry.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Liberty Cemetery with Rev. Paul Kvasnicka officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Friday, July 22, 2016, at Robinson Funeral Home.
