Avis Mills Martin, 87, of the Concord Community, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 at Guggenhiemer Nursing Home. Twice widowed her first husband was the late John Wesley Spainhower and her second husband the late James Edward Martin.
Born in Surry County, NC on April 10, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Lonnie Theodore Mills and Annie Atkins Mills. Avis was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Violet Spainhower Roberts and husband, Fred of the Concord Community, and Glinda Spainhower Powell of Portsmouth; a son, Douglas Edward Martin and wife, Teresa of Richmond; one sister, Dorothy M. Martin of Mt. Airy, NC, one brother, Delmer Mills of Ararat ,NC.; six grandchildren, Amy R. Lopez and husband, Michael; Lisa Roberts, Stephanie Blankenship and husband, Dennis; Yancey Powell, Ashley Martin, Jonathan Martin; two great-grandchildren, Sophia R. Lopez and Gabriel M. Lopez; three sisters-in-law, Ethel Frayser of Cartersville, Ethel Martin of Richmond, Irene Jones and husband, Bill, and a brother-in-law, Charlie Martin and wife Gladys all of the Concord Community. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lois M. Edwards.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tim Earnhardt with burial following in Concord Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home from 7-8:30 pm today, Nov. 27, 2009 and other times at the residence.
