Grover Alton Smith, 72, of Farmville, died Monday, January 17, 2011 at the home of his daughter, Tammy Martin.
Born in Appomattox County, on March 14, 1938, he was the son of Neola Barlow Smith and the late Grover Elwood Smith. He was a US Navy veteran, a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Appomattox, and retired from the Farmville DMV office after 30 years service. Alton loved NASCAR and watching his son, Jared play baseball.
In addition to his mother he is survived by four children, Doug Smith, Tammy Martin and husband, Ricky, Cristy Whitted and husband, Byron, and Jared Smith; six grandchildren, Tiffany Baker, Brittney Smith, Sidney Gafford, McKenzie Perdue, Tyler Finley, Jessica Martin; one great-grandson, Ryan Hall; two sisters, Peggy Lawson and Judy Smith; and the mother of his daughters, Phyllis Smith.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Fred Lawson.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 20, 2011, at Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Russell Cheatham and the Rev. Alfred Jones. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and VFW #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of his daughter, Tammy Martin, 2107 Purdum Mill Rd., Appomattox.
The family would like to express their appreciation to hospice nurse, Beverly Davis for the care she gave to Alton.
