Alfred Carlton Phillips Jr., 63, departed this life after a long illness on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Virginia Baptist Hospital Skilled Care Unit. Carlton confessed to Christ at an early age.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Carlton Phillips; his mother, Margaret Babcock Saunders Phillips Seargent; his stepfather, Forriest Seargent; a sister, Margaret Fay (Peggy) Saunders; and a brother, Charles Hunter (Charlie) Phillips.
Carlton leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Roberta Loving Grooms; stepchildren, Gene A. Grooms Jr., Molly Marie Grooms Garrison (Mark), Lorenza A. Russell; the loves of his life, granddaughters, Shameika D. Grooms and Renya L. Russell, who kept his light shining through his roughest days. Other grandchildren who were an inspiration to Papa, Lorenza A. Russell Jr., and Brandon and Andrew Bell; and a host of other family and friends.
Carlton loved the outdoors and photography. He spent much of his time working cross word puzzles well into the night, many times accompanied by a big cup of ice cream. Carlton worked for over 20 years at Central Virginia Training Center, retiring due to his illness. He owned and operated Carlton's Stripping and Refinishing Shop for over 30 years.
A graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Babcock Family Cemetery with the Rev. Gene Beverly officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Robinson Funeral Home.
