Herbert Lee Handy Sr.

Herbert Lee Handy, Sr., 82, of Trent Hatchery Rd., Appomattox, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Nora Doss Handy.

Born in Appomattox, VA on June 28, 1930, he was a son of the late Cessie Mays and James Emmitt Handy, Sr. Herbert started working from a young age on his family’s dairy and tobacco farm. He then went on to work various jobs from the railroad, carpentry, and the Virginia Department of Transportation from which he retired. His favorite pass time hobbies included hunting, fishing, and ball.

Herbert is survived by two sons, H. Lee Handy, Jr. and wife, Lori of Summerville, SC and Ralph Dillard Handy of Appomattox; a daughter, Peggy Handy Ranson and husband, Matt of Clarksville; four grandsons, Daniel Steiner, Justin Trent Ranson, Ryan Lee Handy, and Colby Dillard Handy; two great grandsons, Cole Steiner and Kyan Steiner; a brother, Jack Eugene Handy of Appomattox; and a special friend, Nancy Webb.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Emmitt Handy, Jr. and five sisters, Lorraine H. Gobble, Lessie H. Goin, Virginia H. Bullock, Edith H. Bollinger, and Ruth H. Ayers.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Robinson Funeral Home by Chaplain Steve Flowers. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dana, Martha, Denise, Mary, Janice, Beth, Valerie and Tina for their loving care of Herbert.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060 or the Centra Hospice of Farmville, 713 Oak Street, Farmville, VA. 23901.
